Naya for tampa

A Life of Service

Naya's preparation for public service began at an early age.

“I began political canvassing for former Senator James ‘Jim’ Hargrett, and then for Rep. Betty Reid. Those experiences were the start of my grassroots advocacy.”

Lena Young-Green, Naya’s grandmother, raised her in the culture and tradition of grassroots collaboration and civic engagement. “I quickly learned the value of bringing people together to address complex issues.”   Healthy communities is an ethical commitment for Young.

She worked to connect the city’s walkable green spaces in what is now Tampa’s GreenARTery. Young also worked alongside her family to add diabetes awareness to law enforcement officer training. As a result, Gov. Rick Scott signed HB 201, the Arthur Green Jr. Act, named in honor of her late grandfather, Arthur Green. Young’s professional nonprofit work continued with Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association (THJCA), conducting enrichment programs to empower District 5 youth, then ascending to the role of executive director.

Expanding her experience in communication, Young worked for Tampa radio station WTMP as a programmer for Saturday morning community talk shows, and later as an on-air personality for WMNF, Soul-Man Blues With A Groove show. After graduating from Tampa’s beloved George S. Middleton High School, young earned a Bachelor’s degree in Culture and Media Communication from the University of South Florida, a Master’s in Political Science from Howard University in Washington, DC, and a Nonprofit Management Certification from the University of Tampa. While Young thrives in nonprofit leadership, policy research, strategic planning and sustainable program development, a firm commitment to public service, collaboration and civic engagement operates at her core.
